Find your North Star

Having a north star means knowing where you are heading. Strategy can seem like a complicated and convoluted thing, but at it’s core, its simply knowing where you want to be, then making the day-to-day decisions that keep you heading in that direction.

My tech stack

I love a software solution but I don’t believe in adding new tools unless they deliver a lot of value. Adding tools inherently adds complexity (and cost) so it needs to make my life easier if I am going to use it (and it needs to be amazing if I’m going to pay for it).

So here is a quick summary of the tools I use at Happy Medium.

Squarespace, paid - My website is hosted there, but I also use their invoicing function for my invoices and contracts, and their digital product function for my online courses. All payments to my business come via Squarespace which keeps things tidy.

Notion, paid - I use Notion as a repository for all information related to my business. I use it to store everything; project information, ideas, my CRM* and for sharing templates like my Studio Management WIP board.

Butter, paid - Any software that can make video calls less painful is worth paying for. I use this for all my online meetings and workshops. It’s easy and intuitive for attendees and super smooth for me as a facilitator.

Canva, paid - I use Canva to create all my presentations and social media collateral (besides my reels, they are created by Studio Veil, who are great!)

Substack, free - I recently replaced my Squarespace newsletter for Substack (as discussed in detail here)

Gmail & Google Workspace, paid - Gmail has the best integrations so even if the interface isn’t the nicest it’s easy to connect to something like Notion Mail or Superhuman. It’s also significantly cheaper than Microsoft.

*Notion is not actually a great CRM but I prefer to keep things in one spot rather than invest in a standalone CRM.
